I’m a builder, and have been developing, launching, and operating reliable software solutions my whole career.
I got my start on the text-based Internet with Lynx in the early 90’s and started to understand its full potential when I got my hands on early Mosaic and Netscape Navigator, the first visual web browsers. These were the target browsers for some of my first paid software development projects: I wrote one of the first e-commerce checkout pages (for an Internet hosting provider) and later built a campus social networking and bulletin board system (quite similar to what would ultimately be known as Facebook) while still in college.
After a few years spent programming the software for GE jet engines on Boeing 737 aircraft, I co-founded Logicept, an early digital agency. We created WebPublish, which was likely one of the first hundred website Content Management Systems on the web. While there, I also led the development of an e-commerce platform for one of the largest eyewear retailers in the U.S., complete with financial accounting, shipping integration, PCI and HIPAA compliance. An early adopter of the Linux operating system, I wrote books and courseware to teach others Linux systems administration. A memory game I wrote, RubyRepeat, was one of the first 100 apps available for the iPhone when the App Store launched in 2008. That experience taught me how a simple, well-executed idea could reach a global audience overnight.
I spent the following decade developing leading-edge mobile and web software for major brands like BCG, Bloomberg, Citi, and Harvard, when I saw the opportunity to rethink marketing technology for leading law firms. That led me to create RubyLaw, a marketing technology platform for the legal industry. The goal was to solve a real-world problem—helping law firms manage their complex data and marketing materials simply and effectively in one centralized location, fostering collaboration and efficiency for resource-strapped business development teams.
As founder and technical CEO at RubyLaw, I set the product vision, architected our infrastructure of hundreds of production and development servers, and led the data security and privacy-focused engineering strategy. It was my job to make sure the software and strategy evolved to support our brilliant, and challenging, clients. A crowning achievement was the development and implementation of an AI-driven, intelligent content search engine all the way back in 2015. Innovative work helped RubyLaw grow to serve nearly 20% of the Am Law 200, working with top firms like Cravath, Finnegan, Milbank, and Wilson Sonsini. This journey culminated in RubyLaw’s successful acquisition in 2023.
Along the way, I found I had a knack for explaining complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences. This led to opportunities to write books on software and systems administration and to speak for organizations like the Legal Marketing Association (LMA) and the IEEE.
My philosophy is that technology is a tool that can enable professionals to work smarter, focusing on those areas where they can deliver the most value while the software does the rest.
Today, as CTO, I am energized by the power of AI to truly deliver on that promise, when deployed in a way that it can be used efficiently, reliably, and securely. I help clients navigate the technical hurdles during the most critical stages of AI adoption by providing the strategic security-focused operational guidance they need to turn AI potential into a real competitive advantage.
